Botox® and Dysport™
Wrinkles form due to a combination of multiple factors. The lines that form on your face over time are a combination of skin aging, collagen depletion, and muscle movement. Wrinkles that are a result of overactive muscles, called “dynamic lines”, are perfect candidates for treatment with Botox and Dysport.
Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport™ are similar products with a purified protein that is injected into the muscles underlying these areas to help smooth and diminish the appearance of the wrinkles to create a more relaxed and youthful appearance.
Where does Botox and Dysport work? Most common areas for Botox and Dysport treatments include the the frown lines between the eyebrows (the glabellar lines), the lines across the forehead, and “crow’s feet” (the smile lines at the outside corners of the eyes). Other concerns such as chin dimpling, jaw line definition, and excessive gum line are candidates Another effective treatment application for Botox is to reduce sweating in the underarm area, called hyperhidrosis.
How does Botox and Dysport work? During treatment, very low doses of Botox or Dysport are administered by a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that are responsible for the lines that we are trying to reduce (such as frown lines between the eyebrows). By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox or Dysport enables these muscles to relax. The effects are very localized and, when administered by an experienced injector, do not affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression. Botox and Dysport treatments typically need to be done every three to five months to maintain the results, depending on the area and the individual client.
What is the treatment like? The treatment is a quick and minimally invasive procedure consisting of a few tiny injections, usually taking only 10 to 15 minutes and there is no downtime afterward. Your provider will determine exactly where to administer these injections to achieve the best results for you. No anesthesia is required, although we may use a cold pack or numbing cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is minimal and brief.
Because of its relatively low cost, quick results and low level of discomfort, Botox (and Dysport) is the most popular aesthetic procedure administered by medical providers across the country, with over 3 million treatments given each year. Working mothers between ages of 35 and 55 are very common clients, but we also see many older women and, increasingly, men for Botox and Dysport. Here at Eden Medispa, we have provided over 700 treatments and both of our Botox and Dysport providers—Lynore Martinez, MD and Belinda Mori, CFNP—have advanced training in injection techniques of these products.
